I started LightPrint years ago as a website devoted to photographic "C-prints." That was nearly ten years ago now and I've since retired all my C-prints "photo-chemical" equipment. Sadly C-prints were a dying art I couldn't continue to keep alive, despite my best efforts. There were other reasons for this besides aging and hard to maintain equipment. Although traditional C-prints looked amazing, as it's light sensitive paper exposed with light and chemically processed, i.e. a "real" photograph, they had their limitations. Namely, longevity. And a close second, color gamut. Two things fine art giclee AKA Epson ink jet prints have in spades. Using the latest Epson SureColor technology inks on the latest SureColor Epson printers yield prints that will last for up to 200 years, depending on exposure to light. Compare that with C-prints, 40-50 years, at best. So if you're going to bother with printing your photography or art prints, you presumably want it to last, and be sold and coveted as gallery quality and archival. So the switch was made, and since I've discovered how good the right paper (i.e. Hahnemule) could look coming off the latest Epson fine art printer (SureColor P10000/20000), I've never looked back. And I really don't miss the chemicals, I imagine the Hudson doesn't either...
A bit more about me. I studied photography and printing at Rochester Institute of Technology in the 90s. I worked in a black and white darkroom at the Smithsonian in high school through an internship I was lucky to get. And I then moved to NYC in the mid-nineties to pursue a photography career. Struggling to pay my bills as a starving artist I found the then lucrative career of photo retouching suited my background and attention to detail. After bouncing around a bit I started my own retouching firm called Proof Digital. I soon discovered the frustrating feeling of seeing images I labored over for hours and hours print in the magazine (remember those?!) with an unsettling color balance. Further down the color rabbit hole I went. In most cases back then it was the industry as a whole had not fully well adopted good color management practices, but I had my proof in hand just in case! Soon I launched cmykproof.com to help fellow retouchers, designers and photographers communicate color effectively in print.
And soon after I launched lightprint.com for C-prints. I've since been certified by GMG (german color software for fine art printing and CMYK + Pantone proofing) 3 times in 10 years, and recently became a dealer and launched a website for color management paper, inks, supplies and consulting called cmyk.plus. Essentially my entire life has been devoted to the photographic print. Maybe I will pick up a camera again. :)
In addition to my background I'm lucky to have an artisan framer working alongside me, named Xavier Montes aka "Christian". Necessary, as I'm just not very good with manual labor, and framing and mounting really is an art in it's own right.
